Selon l’honorable Winston Churchill, la première victime de la guerre est la vérité. Il est difficile de contester la justesse de cette affirmation du vieux lion britannique. Depuis la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, et tout au long des conflits armés de notre siècle, la propagande fondée sur les atrocités, réelles ou supposées, commises par l’adversaire, est devenue partie intégrante de l’arsenal idéologique, de plus en plus indispensable pour remporter la victoire finale.Au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, les Alliés, qui monopolisaient presque entièrement les agences de presse à travers le monde, ont accusé l’Allemagne des pires atrocités. La propagande sur les atrocités est devenue, entre les mains d’hommes intelligents mais dépourvus de scrupules, une science exacte. Des récits incroyables de la barbarie germanique en France et en Belgique ont créé le mythe d’une bestialité exceptionnelle des Allemands ; mythe qui continue d’influencer l’esprit de nombreuses personnes aujourd’hui. Les uhlans - a-t-on rapporté solennellement au monde entier - s’amusaient à jeter en l’air des bébés belges et à les transpercer de leurs baïonnettes lorsqu’ils retombaient ; ils coupaient également les mains des infirmières de la Croix-Rouge. La presse et la radio anglo-saxonnes ont annoncé la crucifixion de prisonniers canadiens. Mais peut-être la  nouvelle  la plus répugnante et la plus largement diffusée concernait-elle une usine de traitement des cadavres, dans laquelle les corps des soldats, tant allemands qu’alliés, morts au combat, étaient  fondus  pour en extraire la graisse et d’autres produits utiles à l’effort de guerre des Empires centraux. Le fait qu’Arthur Ponsonby, éminent historien et homme politique britannique, ait démoli cette fable n’a pas empêché le procureur soviétique au procès de Nuremberg d’accuser à nouveau l’Allemagne d’avoir mis en place une usine de savon fabriqué à partir de graisse humaine, à Dantzig, en 1942.
