A partire dalla guerra franco-prussiana del 1870, e per tutti i conflitti armati del nostro secolo, la propaganda basata sulle atrocità, reali o presunte, commesse dal nemico, è diventata parte integrante dell’arsenale ideologico, sempre più indispensabile per ottenere la vittoria finale.Durante la Prima guerra mondiale, gli Alleati, che monopolizzavano quasi interamente le agenzie di stampa in tutto il mondo, accusarono la Germania delle peggiori atrocità. La propaganda sulle atrocità è diventata, nelle mani di uomini intelligenti ma privi di scrupoli, una scienza esatta. Racconti incredibili della barbarie germanica in Francia e in Belgio hanno creato il mito di un’eccezionale bestialità dei tedeschi; mito che continua a influenzare la mente di molte persone ancora oggi. Gli ulani - è stato solennemente riferito al mondo intero - si divertivano a lanciare in aria i bambini belgi e a trafiggerli con le baionette quando ricadevano; tagliavano anche le mani alle infermiere della Croce Rossa. La stampa e la radio anglosassoni hanno annunciato la crocifissione di prigionieri canadesi. Ma forse la notizia più ripugnante e più ampiamente diffusa riguardava un impianto di trattamento dei cadaveri, in cui i corpi dei soldati, sia tedeschi che alleati, morti in battaglia, venivano fusi per estrarne il grasso e altri prodotti utili allo sforzo bellico delle potenze dell’Intesa. Il fatto che Arthur Ponsonby, eminente storico e politico britannico, abbia smontato questa favola non ha impedito al procuratore sovietico al processo di Norimberga di accusare nuovamente la Germania di aver istituito una fabbrica di sapone a base di grasso umano a Danzica, nel 1942.
