Laut dem ehrenwerten Winston Churchill ist die Wahrheit das erste Opfer des Krieges. Es ist schwer, die Richtigkeit dieser Aussage des alten britischen Löwen anzuzweifeln. Seit dem Deutsch-Französischen Krieg von 1870 und während aller bewaffneten Konflikte unseres Jahrhunderts ist Propaganda, die auf tatsächlichen oder vermeintlichen Gräueltaten des Gegners basiert, zu einem festen Bestandteil des ideologischen Arsenals geworden, das für den endgültigen Sieg immer unverzichtbarer wird.Während des Ersten Weltkriegs beschuldigten die Alliierten, die die Presseagenturen weltweit fast vollständig monopolisierten, Deutschland der schlimmsten Gräueltaten. Die Propaganda über Gräueltaten wurde in den Händen intelligenter, aber skrupelloser Männer zu einer exakten Wissenschaft. Unglaubliche Berichte über germanische Barbarei in Frankreich und Belgien schufen den Mythos einer außergewöhnlichen Bestialität der Deutschen; ein Mythos, der bis heute die Gedanken vieler Menschen prägt. Die Ulanen - so wurde der ganzen Welt feierlich berichtet - vergnügten sich damit, belgische Babys in die Luft zu werfen und sie mit ihren Bajonetten aufzuspießen, wenn sie wieder zu Boden fielen; außerdem schnitten sie den Krankenschwestern des Roten Kreuzes die Hände ab. Die angelsächsische Presse und der Rundfunk berichteten von der Kreuzigung kanadischer Gefangener. Doch die vielleicht widerwärtigste und am weitesten verbreitete „Nachricht' betraf eine Leichenverwertungsanlage, in der die Leichen der im Kampf gefallenen Soldaten - sowohl deutscher als auch alliierter - „eingeschmolzen' wurden, um daraus Fett und andere für den Kriegseinsatz der Mittelmächte nützliche Produkte zu gewinnen. Die Tatsache, dass Arthur Ponsonby, ein angesehener britischer Historiker und Politiker, diese Fabel widerlegt hatte, hinderte den sowjetischen Ankläger beim Nürnberger Prozess nicht daran, Deutschland erneut zu beschuldigen, 1942 in Danzig eine Seifenfabrik betrieben zu haben, in der Seife aus Menschenfett hergestellt wurde.
