The transformation of the Roman Empire from a predominantly polytheistic state into a Christian empire stands among the most consequential developments in world history. Few historical processes have generated as much scholarly debate, not only because of their religious significance but also because of their profound political, legal, cultural, and social implications. The emergence of Christianity from a persecuted and frequently marginalized movement into the dominant religion of the empire altered the foundations of public life, reshaped imperial ideology, transformed legal institutions, and redefined the relationship between religious belief and state authority. The present study examines this transformation through the lens of Roman imperial legislation, arguing that law constituted one of the principal mechanisms through which Christianization was articulated, promoted, negotiated, and enforced.
