Questo studio discute la relazione tra i costrutti di immagine, stereotipi nazionali e attrattività dei sistemi di istruzione superiore (HE), analizzando il caso portoghese nel contesto europeo. La crescente importanza della mobilità accademica (come conseguenza della globalizzazione, delle decisioni politiche e del mercato) insieme al declino demografico, all’aumento degli sforzi di internazionalizzazione degli istituti di istruzione superiore (IIS) in tutto il mondo e all’aumento generale della competitività globale ha costretto gli IIS, e le loro regioni e paesi, a utilizzare sempre più strategie e strumenti di comunicazione nel tentativo di attrarre investimenti, risorse e studenti per mantenere e migliorare la loro posizione o addirittura sopravvivere. La ricerca empirica si è basata su un campione di studenti europei provenienti da vari IIS appartenenti alla rete EDCOM, da cui è stato misurato lo stereotipo del Portogallo - sulla base dello Stereotype Content Model (Fiske et al., 2002) e la sua correlazione con l’intenzione di completare tutto o parte del programma di istruzione superiore in Portogallo. Le implicazioni di questo studio permettono di comprendere e quindi progettare strategie per promuovere l’attrattività del sistema di istruzione superiore portoghese.
