Cette étude examine la relation entre les concepts d’image, les stéréotypes nationaux et l’attractivité des systèmes d’enseignement supérieur, en analysant le cas du Portugal dans le contexte européen. L’importance croissante de la mobilité académique (conséquence de la mondialisation, des décisions politiques et du marché) ainsi que le déclin démographique, les efforts accrus d’internationalisation des établissements d’enseignement supérieur (EES) dans le monde entier et l’augmentation générale de la compétitivité mondiale ont contraint les EES, ainsi que leurs propres régions et pays, à utiliser de plus en plus de stratégies et d’outils de communication pour tenter d’attirer des investissements, des ressources et des étudiants afin de maintenir et d’améliorer leur position, voire de survivre. La recherche empirique s’est basée sur un échantillon d’étudiants européens issus de divers établissements d’enseignement supérieur appartenant au réseau EDCOM, à partir duquel le stéréotype du Portugal a été mesuré - sur la base du Stereotype Content Model (Fiske et al., 2002) - et sa corrélation avec l’intention de suivre tout ou partie d’un programme d’enseignement supérieur au Portugal. Les implications de cette étude permettent de comprendre et donc de concevoir des stratégies pour promouvoir l’attractivité du système d’enseignement supérieur portugais.
