The debate over consciousness has lasted decades and there is no end in sight. Or is there? In the field of human knowledge, the way forward has always necessitated a challenge to orthodoxy.Discovery is finding new ways. That is what this book attempts. The answers may appear strange, some may be difficult to accept; but they have all been hidden in plain sight.Human consciousness has two discrete components: sentience and cognition. Sentience is a quantum system. Complex thought is a byproduct of language.Cognition is complex because language is productive. It produces infinite concepts from finite resources.Toddlers are taught language because language is cultural, not natural. They cannot learn it by themselves. We are born cute, but not quite human. We become human with language and culture. Language is the gel that binds humanity together. We cannot live without it or be human without it.Humanity has become a superorganism that has taken over the planet. It is hard to accept. We think of ourselves as individuals but cannot live alone. We are like termites in a huge mound: the world.Tens of thousands of years ago, something unique took place that would forever change everything on Earth. Hominins had begun a long process, grunting and yelling. Towards the end of the process, human individuals were exchanging complex information using recursive language. At some point along the line, things had changed. What started as something natural had gradually become artificial, meta-evolutionary. Hominins had created language and language had created humanity.

While the great scientists of the past recognized a need for a multidisciplinary approach, today’s schools often treat math and science as subjects separate from the rest. This not only creates a disinterest among students, but also a potential learning gap once students reach college and then graduate into the workforce. My first contact with him goes back to the late 1950s, when I was at the Institute for Advanced Study, and then evolved when I was a consultant at General Atomics in La Jolla, California. Freeman was then trying to design a space ship — the Orion — which would be propelled by atomic bo...

  • A hybrid consciousness?
    Rafael Pintos-López
Human consciousness is more than just experience. It has included thought since we became human. Cognition and humanity are the result of language. And there is nothing universal or natural about language. Language is cultural and artificial. The result is that human consciousness is a hybrid ’black swan’ phenomenon. Some of the great thinkers of the past knew this. They are bei...

  • Zen explicado

The title of this book is quite clear. It is about Zen Buddhism, but explained for a Western readership. Zen is famously obscure in terms of logic, or any kind of intellectual explanation. This book attempts just that. It explains how Zen operates. It does it with words, but it does not purport to replace Zen meditation practice. It is like an introductory brochure to a practic...

  • Human Consciousness - The Impact of Language and Culture
    Rafael Pintos-López
This book proposes that human consciousness is Cartesian dualistic, two-layered affair, that the layers are integrated but discrete, and provides the explanation that human individuals, as part of an altricial species, acquire cognition through an ongoing education and socialisation process that lasts several years. The book also proposes that time does not exist without high c...

  • On the Emergence of Human Consciousness
    Rafael Pintos-López
The Emergence of Human Consciousness questions the current physicalist approach in neuroscience. According to the author, human consciousness includes two layers: a basic, biological one; and a social one. Any evolutionist approach to human consciousness is doomed to reach a ceiling, as it cannot account for the social layer. The emergence of human consciousness is a metaevolut...
