Tayyip Erdogan est devenu maire d’Istanbul en tant que représentant du Parti islamiste du bien-être (RP) en 1994 et a lancé son premier projet de logements sociaux, baptisé Basak Konutlari. Ce projet immobilier a vu le jour en tant qu’espace urbain destiné aux familles religieuses de la classe moyenne inférieure exclues sur le plan politique, économique et culturel, et a été rebaptisé Basaksehir. Les élites laïques ont stigmatisé Basaksehir en le qualifiant de ghetto musulman , ce qui a dissuadé les familles laïques d’y investir. Parallèlement à la montée de l’islamisme dans la sphère politique, cette stigmatisation a toutefois servi de stratégie marketing pour attirer les classes moyennes émergentes et a entraîné une gentrification religieuse. Cette recherche est une monographie sur une communauté religieuse fermée. Son objectif est de décrire comment les religions se réapproprient la sphère urbaine et comment elles sont à nouveau profanées par les actions des personnes religieuses dans le monde profane.
