Tayyip Erdogan tornou-se presidente da câmara de Istambul como representante do Partido do Bem-Estar Islâmico (RP), em 1994, e iniciou o seu primeiro projeto de habitação social chamado Basak Konutlari. Este projeto habitacional surgiu como um espaço urbano para famílias religiosas da classe média baixa excluídas política, económica e culturalmente, e foi renomeado como Basaksehir. As elites seculares estigmatizaram Basaksehir como um gueto muçulmano e esse estigma impediu as famílias seculares de investir nele. Paralelamente à ascensão do islamismo na esfera política, no entanto, o mesmo estigma serviu bem como estratégia de marketing para atrair a classe média em ascensão e causou a gentrificação religiosa. Esta investigação é uma monografia sobre uma área de condomínio fechado religioso. O seu objetivo é descrever como as religiões recuperam a esfera urbana e como são re-profanadas através das ações das pessoas religiosas no mundo mundano.
