Kunstmatige intelligentie-algoritmen waren geweldig in hun gebruik in de praktijk. Na succesvolle toepassing van verschillende rekentechnieken ontstond er een sterke behoefte aan de ontwikkeling van Intelligente Systemen en begon er een nieuw tijdperk van Soft Computing. Genetische algoritmen zijn zo’n soft-computingstechniek die de natuur nabootst en alle potentie van een rekentechniek heeft. Genetische algoritmen zijn rekenalgoritmen die zijn opgebouwd naar analogie van het evolutieproces. Genetische algoritmen zijn een klasse van stochastische zoekmethoden die proberen goede oplossingen te vinden voor moeilijke optimalisatieproblemen door de natuurlijke evolutie na te bootsen. In de afgelopen drie decennia hebben genetische algoritmen zich succesvol bewezen in het oplossen van multitudineuze problemen uit zeer uiteenlopende domeinen zoals optimalisatie, automatische programmering, ontwerp van elektronische circuits, telecommunicatie, netwerken, financiën, economie, beeldanalyse, signaalverwerking, muziek en kunst. Met deze toepassingen van genetische algoritmen is het mogelijk om genetische algoritmen te gebruiken in Software Engineering om het testproces te automatiseren.
