Wenn ich mich entschlossen habe, die in den 'Ergebnissen der Hygiene' publizierte Monographie in Buchform erscheinen zu lassen, so geschah dies in der Uberzeugung, daB dieses Thema nicht nur die engeren Fachgenossen, sondern auch den Arzt, den Biologen, Anthropologen und Genetiker interessiert. Wir sehen in der Tat ein steigendes Interesse ffir diese eigentumliche gruppenspezifische Differenzierung des Blutes; besondere Gesellschaften und Kommissionen wurden gegriindet, um diese Probleme zu fordern. Ich kann mich aber des Eindruckes nicht erwehren, daB dieses Interesse und die Popularisierung des Themas, so wunschenswert sie sind, auch manche Gefahr in sich bergen. Der Mediziner sucht nach einfachen Korrelationen zwischen Krankheit und Gruppe; fur den Ver­ erbungsforscher und Anthropologen fallen die gruppenspezifischen Bluteigen­ schaften unter die vielen oft nebensachlichen Merkmale, deren statistische Bearbeitung schon jetzt ihnen moglich erscheint. Meiner Uberzeugung nach sind die Blutgruppenprobleme komplizierter und tiefer dadurch, daB es sich um Merkmale handelt, die antigene Wirkungen entfalten und daher Gegen­ reaktionen im Organismus auslOsen konnen. Schon die normale Anwesenbeit der Isoantikorper deutet auf tiefere Beziehungen zu dem physiologischen Gescheben des Organismus hin. Den Serologen, gewohnt die Abwehrreaktionen des Organis­ mus zu betrachten, widerstrebt es, an den moglichen Tiefen dieser Probleme vorbeizugeben. Moge dieses Buch das Ziel erfiillen: das bereits Erkannte, sicher Gewordene darzustellen, auf das Mogliche, vielleicht Werdende hinzuweisen. Warschau, im Oktober 1927. L.
