Farmers’ Movements A Glimpse into the Past: the peasant movement led by Gokul Singh during the Mughal era escalated into a war with Aurangzeb.Farmers’ movements took place during the British era, including the Indigo Revolt, Moplah Rebellion, Bardoli, Champaran, and Kheda Satyagrahas, Tebhaga, Telangana, Eka, and Shekhawati movements.Peasant movements have occurred after independence. However, the farmers’ protest of 2020-21 lasted for 378 days, ultimately leading the government to withdraw the three contentious laws; this struggle also claimed the lives of over 700 farmers.Farmers have witnessed and endured the harsh blows of circumstance-including natural calamities like droughts, floods, and fires; a lack of irrigation infrastructure; and the absence of proper management for bumper harvests of crops such as sugarcane, potatoes, and tomatoes.While various advancements and reforms have taken place in the agricultural sector-such as the establishment of agricultural universities, research centers, the FCI, agricultural markets, fertilizer plants, and refineries, alongside the introduction of improved seeds and irrigation facilities-there remains an urgent need for continuous deliberation and progress regarding MSP, crop storage, marketing, food processing (particularly for potatoes, tomatoes, vegetables, sugarcane, etc.), certified seeds (including hybrids), organic farming, and the use of solar energy for irrigation and other agricultural purposes.
