Aaye Kanaagat Foole Kaans.During the month of Ashwin the Sun resides in the Virgo zodiac sign (Kanya Rashi). Consequently, this period is referred to as Kanya Aagat/Gat (Sun’s arrival in Virgo). The word Kanagat is a colloquial corruption of this term, Kanya Aagat. A 16-day Shraddh Paksha is observed, comprising the first 15 days of the month of Ashwin plus the preceding Purnima of the Bhadrapad. Of the remaining 15 days, the first nine are dedicated to the Sharad Durga festival, next festival of Dussehra. Additionally, the ’Tesu-Jhanjhi’ festival-a folk tradition spanning the final five days of the month.Autumn Season: Nature signals this seasonal transition when white flowers begin to bloom on the Kans grass. Consequently, farmers-while honoring the memory of their ancestors-begin agricultural activities and initiate processes for betrothals and matrimonial alliances. This gave rise to the popular saying: ' Aaye Kanagat Foole Kaans.' Subsequent lines were added-such as 'Brahmins leap nine-nine baans high. This practice has, however, assumed excessive proportions. Awareness campaigns are needed to encourage frugality in Shraddh observances. Prioritizing spending on children’s education over lavishness in matrimonial arrangements would be a meaningful initiative.The essence of Shraddh lies in bringing peace to one’s ancestors and seeking their blessings for prosperity and abundance.For Shraddh, it is not wealth that matters, but devotion (Shraddha).
