Das Buch bietet eine Einführung in die empirische Überprüfung mehrdimensionaler kausaler Erklärungen, ihre Abbildung als Kausalmodelle und die notwendigen Schritte zu ihrer Formalisierung. Dabei wird immer von leicht verständlichen inhaltlichen Fragestellungen ausgegangen, an denen auch aufgezeigt wird, welche Probleme auftreten, wenn Einflußgrößen untereinander durch gemeinsame Faktoren verbunden sind. Aus der propädeutischen Darstellung von einfacher und multipler Korrelation und Regression sowie der partiellen Korrelation wird in anschaulicher Weise die partielle Pfadanalyse hergeleitet, eine mögliche Lösung bei Multikollinearität von Einflußgrößen. Alle gängigen analytischen Modelle zur Parameterschätzung von rekursiven und nichtrekursiven bzw. interdependenten Systemen werden erläutert: SIMON-BLALOCK-Technik, partielle und klassische Pfadanalyse sowie die zweistufige Kleinste-Quadrate-Schätzung. Das Buch wendet sich einerseits an Studierende der Fachgebiete Geographie, Ökonomie und Soziologie, in denen konkrete Forschungsfragen zur Analyse komplexer Wirkungsgefüge behandelt werden. Andererseits ist es für den Leserkreis gedacht, der die analytischen Modelle anwenden möchte. Sie werden nämlich nicht nur erläutert, sondern sind in Form eines FORTRAN Programms für die praktische Anwendung erschlossen. Hierin kommt einmal mehr das Bemühen des Autors zum Ausdruck, die mathmatischen Vorkenntnisse und Anforderungen so gering wie möglich zu halten.
