In diesem Beitrag werden die Auswirkungen der Kapitalstruktur auf die Performance börsennotierter Nicht-Finanzunternehmen in Nigeria zwischen 1996 und 2012 untersucht. Die Studie verwendete sowohl die ökonometrische Methode der ersten als auch der zweiten Generation des Panel-Unit-Root-Tests, die Hauptkomponentenanalyse und die verallgemeinerte Momentenmethode. Als Maßstäbe für die Unternehmensleistung wurden die Gesamtkapitalrendite, die Eigenkapitalrendite, das Kurs-Gewinn-Verhältnis, Tobins Q und ein konstruierter Leistungsindex herangezogen, während die Verschuldungsquote als Maßstab für die Kapitalstruktur diente. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Kapitalstruktur einen negativen und signifikanten Einfluss auf die Unternehmensleistung hat. Die Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die Agenturkosten der Nicht-Finanzunternehmen an der nigerianischen Börse sehr hoch sind und zu einer negativen Leistung führen.
