Jephthah and His Daughter is a dramatic cantata in three acts, written by Phineas G. Hull and published in 1911. The story is based on the biblical account of Jephthah, a judge of Israel, who makes a rash vow to sacrifice the first thing that comes out of his house if he is victorious in battle. Unfortunately, his daughter is the first to greet him upon his return, and he is forced to fulfill his vow. The cantata features a cast of characters, including Jephthah, his daughter, and various members of his household and community. The text is written in verse, with musical accompaniment, and includes solos, duets, and choruses. Hull’s adaptation of the biblical story explores themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and the consequences of rash decisions.
