A necessidade de energia tem vindo a aumentar exponencialmente a nível mundial. Atualmente, as necessidades energéticas globais dependem sobretudo dos combustíveis fósseis, o que acaba por levar ao esgotamento previsível da limitada fonte de energia fóssil. A combustão de combustíveis fósseis tem também graves efeitos negativos no ambiente devido à emissão de carbono. As preocupações com as alterações climáticas, o aumento da procura global das reservas finitas de petróleo e gás natural e a segurança energética estão a intensificar a procura de alternativas aos combustíveis fósseis. Existem várias estratégias de processamento biológico que produzem bioenergia ou bioquímicos durante o tratamento de águas residuais industriais e agrícolas, incluindo a digestão anaeróbica metanogénica, a produção biológica de hidrogénio e as células de combustível microbianas. O tema revelou a importância da bioeletricidade derivada dos microrganismos isolados das águas residuais e a tecnologia das algas será uma nova fonte a utilizar no futuro. Espero que este livro seja útil para os jovens cientistas deste domínio relevante e também para os estudantes e que sirva de estímulo para novas investigações.
