Ramón y Aníbal, los dos líderes principales del movimiento de liberación, advirtieron a Gaetano de que el plan de remover a su padre por la fuerza incluiría, de ser necesario, su muerte. No mucho tiempo después de haber asumido la presidencia del país, Gaetano ordenó la muerte de Ramón y envió a Aníbal al exilio, donde eventualmente murió. Liberado de la presión de ambos líderes, Gaetano y su medio hermano, Heracles, desatan entonces una ola de persecución contra todos sus críticos. Muchos corrieron a esconderse, otros salieron al extranjero entre ellos Carlos. En el Alto Manhattan, el hijo del calderero de Río Dulce, llega a construir una de las organizaciones de distribución de cocaína más grandes en el Alto Manhattan.Para entonces, a Gaetano lo había sucedido en la presidencia su sobrino, Alberto Buenavista. Debido a su popularidad, y gracias a que durante su gobierno la Isla estaba viviendo el mejor período económico de su historia, Alberto fue elegido a un segundo término. Un año antes de concluir su mandato presidencial, un reportaje periodístico que denunciaba la corrupción en su gobierno, desencadenó un enfrentamiento armado entre el presidente y el General Contreras. Muchos murieron en La Vega. Al final, todos los personajes se dan cita en el Palacio Presidencial el día de la juramentación del nuevo Presidente.
