Seit der Finanzkrise 2008 haben die kanadische Regierung und die Finanzindustrie Programme ins Leben gerufen, um Kanadiern dabei zu helfen, ihre Finanzkompetenz zu verbessern. Diese Bemühungen scheinen jedoch nicht bei der Öffentlichkeit anzukommen, da Untersuchungen gezeigt haben, dass sie der Finanzbranche und Finanzberatern weiterhin misstrauisch gegenüberstehen und nachlässige persönliche Finanzgewohnheiten an den Tag legen. Um das Vertrauen der Öffentlichkeit wiederherzustellen, könnten Investor Relations und/oder Public Relations die Situation möglicherweise verbessern, indem sie strategische, leicht verständliche Bildungsbotschaften zur Förderung der Finanzkompetenz vermitteln, die bei den Kanadiern Anklang finden. Obwohl viel über die Lese- und Schreibfähigkeit in den Bereichen Allgemeinbildung, Medien und Finanzen geschrieben wurde, gibt es nur sehr wenige Untersuchungen über Investor Relations und Finanzkommunikation, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit im Zusammenhang mit Investor Relations und die Kommunikationstheorie des Berufsfeldes Investor Relations. In dieser Forschungsarbeit wird untersucht, wie und in welchem Umfang Investor Relations- und/oder PR-Fachleute als Vermittler von Finanzkompetenz in Kanada eine Rolle spielen.
