Este livro foi concebido para fornecer conhecimentos abrangentes e actualizados sobre a classificação e a taxonomia do mundo microbiano. Nos últimos anos, a sistemática procariótica evoluiu significativamente com a crescente compreensão das relações evolutivas entre os microrganismos. O livro está dividido em cinco capítulos: O Capítulo I apresenta os fundamentos da sistemática procariótica, abrangendo a classificação procariótica histórica, a importância da sistemática e os métodos fundamentais de taxonomia e identificação. O Capítulo II analisa a abordagem moderna da taxonomia procariótica (taxonomia polifásica: dados fenotípicos, genotípicos e filogenéticos para a classificação de microrganismos). O Capítulo III apresenta uma cobertura exaustiva dos principais filos bacterianos, as suas caraterísticas distintivas, significado ecológico e importância biotecnológica. O Capítulo IV centra-se em profundidade nas Proteobactérias e explora as suas caraterísticas, relações evolutivas e caracterizações ecológicas. Finalmente, o Capítulo V é dedicado ao estudo das Archaea, examinando as caraterísticas distintivas das Archaea, as suas relações evolutivas e as suas caracterizações ecológicas.
