Este libro procede de las experiencias realizadas conjuntamente por Miguel de Guzmán y Baldomero Rubio como profesores de un curso inicial universitario de análisis matemático. Se hicieron sucesivas 'notas de clase' para los estudiantes, quienes sin duda han contribuido a su enriquecimiento al aportar observaciones y sugerencias. Pasa así un largo período y las 'notas' cristalizan en los tres volúmenes de Problemas, Conceptos y Métodos del Análisis Matemático, Miguel de Guzmán y Baldomero Rubio, Ediciones Pirámide, Madrid, 1990-93, que han tenido muy buena acogida por profesores y estudiantes. Ya sin la posible colaboración del gran matemático y educador Miguel de Guzmán, debido a su repentina y dolorosa muerte en 2004, Baldomero Rubio inicia la tarea de continuar la trayectoria del proyecto educativo común como autor y editor de los libros Números y Convergencia y Funciones de variable real, 2006, textos que han tenido también muy buena acogida. Las experiencias del aula durante cinco años más han sugerido importantes mejoras que se recogen en este libro. Es un texto adaptable a diversas interpretaciones de un primer curso universitario de análisis matemático, con posibles prolongaciones que lo hacen especialmente atractivo. 10
