Jean Paul no sólo perfila y enriquece polémicamente con extraordinaria originalidad los grandes conceptos del pensamiento romántico, en gran medida procedentes de Schiller, sino que además a él corresponde el establecimiento moderno de la categoría estético-poética del Humorismo, contrapunto de la de Sublime. Según Hegel, el Humorismo marca el final del proceso creativo del Romanticismo y del Arte.
