Interkulturelle Kompetenz durch interkulturelles Lernen - Schlagwörter des 21. Jahrhunderts schlechthin. Globalisierung, Immigrationszuwachs und der stetige Trend zu multikulturellen Gesellschaften führen dazu, dass diese Begriffe für den Großteil der Bevölkerung längst keine Fremdwörter mehr sind: Bereits in jungen Jahren können Schüler durch internationale Austauschprogramme mit Gleichaltrigen aus anderen Kulturen zusammentreffen und dabei frühzeitig ihre Fähigkeiten im Umgang mit fremdkulturellen Personen ausbilden bzw. erweitern. Ann-Kathrin Hörl untersucht, inwieweit interkulturelles Lernen tatsächlich durch internationale Austauschprogramme erreicht bzw. gefördert werden kann. Dabei betrachtet sie zunächst die Thematik des interkulturellen Lernens mit der Sichtweise der interkulturellen Pädagogik und dem Blickwinkel der interkulturellen Austauschforschung, um nachfolgend einen Überblick über die Geschichte internationaler Jugendbegegnungen und aktuelle Möglichkeiten für Jugendliche, ins Ausland zu gehen, zu geben, bevor sie anschließend eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen theoretischen und praktischen Forschungsarbeiten zum Thema vorlegt. Hörl deckt erstaunliche Schwachstellen bei der Methodensorgfalt der von ihr untersuchten Studien und den darin aufgeführten Ergebnissen zu interkulturellem Lernen auf. Ihr Buch ist in besonderem Maße interessant für die interkulturelle Austauschforschung, da sie neue Impulse für zukünftige Forschungsarbeiten gibt. Aber auch Anbietern von Schüleraustauschprogrammen, Eltern und Schülern selbst stellt sie aufschlussreiche Informationen zur Verfügung. 3
