Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, das Verständnis von EFL-Lehrern für die neuen Überlegungen zu bereichern, die mit der Art des Sprachenlernens im Hinblick auf den zunehmenden Prozess der globalen wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sprachlichen und kulturellen Integration verbunden sind. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass der Globalisierungsprozess dazu neigt, nationale Grenzen zu verwischen, und dies hat bereits mit der Europäischen Union begonnen. Darüber hinaus hat der Einsatz von computergestützten Lerngeräten und anderen IKT-Instrumenten, die die Welt in einen dörflichen Planeten verwandelt haben, enorme Auswirkungen auf den Bereich der Fremdsprachenpädagogik. All dies führt praktisch zu einem größeren Bedarf an interkulturellem Wissen. Die kommunikativen Ziele des Sprachenlernens der 70er und 80er Jahre wurden aus interkulturellen Gründen neu gestaltet, um ein neues Konzept hervorzubringen: die inter- bzw. interkulturelle Kompetenz. Dieses interkulturelle Schema, so könnte man argumentieren, stellt die Verbindung zwischen dem Lehren von Sprache und dem Lernen von Kultur sicher, daher der von Byram et al. (1994) geprägte Begriff des interkulturellen Sprachunterrichts oder des Ansatzes „Lehren und Lernen von Sprache und Kultur' (im Folgenden TLLC).
