Ciò è dovuto principalmente alle differenze nelle loro abitudini di crescita e, in una certa misura, all’allelopatia. L’allelopatia è stata definita come l’effetto inibitorio o stimolatorio di una pianta o di un microrganismo su altre piante attraverso il rilascio di composti chimici nell’ambiente. Alcune colture, in particolare le piante cerealicole come il grano, l’orzo e il mais, producono anch’esse sostanze chimiche che influenzano la crescita e lo sviluppo di altre piante.
