Nos últimos tempos, a inteligência emocional (IE) tem surgido como uma construção-chave na exploração emocional contemporânea, emergindo como uma das facetas do intelecto mais amplamente discutidas na literatura existente. O estudo da IE floresceu em parte devido à crescente importância individual do intelecto e dos sentimentos para os alunos no mundo atual. Tem-se mesmo argumentado que a IE prevê critérios educativos e profissionais vitais para além dos previstos pela capacidade racional comum. Os alunos com um elevado grau de associação no ambiente de aprendizagem apresentam um grau de familiaridade com o fluxo de aprendizagem significativamente superior ao dos alunos com um menor grau de envolvimento nas acções do ambiente de aprendizagem. A investigação revelou que os instrutores têm o impacto mais forte e mais direto no desempenho emocional dos alunos no ambiente educativo.
