As galhas representam um fenómeno natural fascinante que reflecte interações íntimas entre organismos que foram moldadas pela evolução orgânica ao longo de milhões de anos. Conhecem-se cerca de 13 000 espécies de galhas de insectos no mundo. Os indutores de galhas evoluíram independentemente em seis ordens de insectos, nomeadamente Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera e Hymenoptera. As galhas podem ser induzidas por uma grande variedade de organismos, nomeadamente vírus, bactérias, fungos, algas, nemátodos, copépodes e plantas da família Loranthaceae, mas são principalmente causadas por insectos. A riqueza de espécies de insectos formadores de galhas varia muito entre regiões biogeográficas, e as galhas ocorrem com muito mais frequência em determinados taxa de plantas. Os insectos galhadores são capazes de alterar a estrutura e a química dos tecidos dos seus hospedeiros para o estabelecimento e desenvolvimento das suas galhas através de estímulos mecânicos e químicos. Cada espécie de indutor produz galhas que são anatómica e fisiologicamente diferentes das induzidas por outras espécies relacionadas. A indução de galhas em plantas é considerada a associação mais complexa entre insectos e plantas no mundo natural.
