Traduzindo à letra, um bibliófilo (do grego biblion, livro, e philos, amigo) é um amante de livros. E é de propósito que utilizo a definição dada por Morais. É que o termo amante explica muito mais o bibliófilo do que o termo amigo. Conheço muitos bibliomaníacos, com verdadeiras e colossais bibliotecas, mesmo com algumas raridades, para quem o livro constitui apenas um divertimento ou um investimento. Compram livros como quem compra laranjas, pelo aspeto e pelo peso (o que, no caso do livro, se pode representar pela encadernação e data de edição). Ora, o bibliófilo não é apenas aquele que tem livros dos séculos XV e XVI, ou de outras épocas recuadas. Para os ter, basta possuir dinheiro - conheço muitos bibliomaníacos com verdadeiras fortunas em livros que deles não tiram qualquer proveito, pois nem sequer os sabem ler, ou têm tempo para os catalogar e arrumar (contudo, ajudam a preservar o património). Pode-se até ser bibliófilo sem possuir nenhum livro dos séculos anteriores ao século XX. O que é, então, necessário para ser bibliófilo? É necessário amor, carinho e estudo pelo livro que se comprou, seja ele a primeira edição de Os Lusiadas (1572) ou a da Mensagem (1934), só para dar dois exemplos, entre os maiores, da poesia portuguesa.A principal finalidade da tipografia é a produção, num tempo relativamente breve, de numerosas cópias da mesma obra. Enquanto, até ao século XV, pelo processo da cópia manuscrita, reproduzir o texto de uma obra levava muito tempo, com a invenção da imprensa passou a ser possível, em conceito, produzir simultaneamente dezenas ou centenas de exemplares: todos relativamente iguais e todos relativamente perfeitos (ressalvando que os produtos artesanais só alcançam a similitude entre si, e não a perfeita igualdade). Embora nos grandes centros culturais houvesse alguma tradição de fabrico em série, utilizando o método do ditado, a série nunca seria comparável, em número, ao que um simples prelo poderia fazer.
