A germinação das sementes é controlada por sinais ambientais, incluindo luz e fitohormonas endógenas. O ácido abscísico (ABA) inibe, enquanto a giberelina (GA) promove a germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial das plântulas, respetivamente. Aqui, relatamos que a ZFP3, uma proteína nuclear C2H2 com dedo de zinco, atua como um regulador negativo da germinação suprimida pelo ABA. Assim, a superexpressão regulada da ZFP3 e dos fatores com dedo de zinco ZFP1, ZFP4, ZFP6 e ZFP7, intimamente relacionados, confere insensibilidade ao ABA à germinação das sementes, enquanto o mutante duplo zfp3 zfp4 apresenta maior suscetibilidade ao ABA. A expressão reduzida de vários genes induzidos pelo ABA, como RAB18 e o fator de transcrição ABI4 em plântulas ZFP3ox, sugere que ZFP3 regula negativamente a sinalização do ABA. A análise das plantas ZFP3ox revelou múltiplas alterações fenotípicas, tais como hábito de crescimento semianão, defeitos na fertilidade e sensibilidade aumentada do alongamento do hipocótilo à luz vermelha, mas não à luz vermelha distante ou azul. A análise das interações genéticas com mutantes fitocromo e abi indica que o ZFP3 regula as respostas à luz e ao ABA durante a germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial das plântulas.
