Juan Bautista Sagarra Blez, professeur à Santiago de Cuba, a accompli un travail remarquable pour l’éducation à Santiago de Cuba et à Cuba entre 1830 et 1870. Son travail en tant qu’auteur de textes scolaires (en particulier sa collection de textes Librería de los Niños Cubanos), directeur d’écoles (techniques, préparatoires et privées) et sa contribution au développement économique et social de la localité sont remarquables. La Librairie des enfants cubains (18 titres) - la première collection de manuels scolaires écrite par un éducateur cubain - représente un lien solide dans l’œuvre générale, rénovatrice, scolaire-pédagogique, didactique-méthodologique, et en particulier dans la production de manuels scolaires pour les enfants et les jeunes cubains. Dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, il a fondé deux des écoles techniques les plus importantes de son époque : l’école préparatoire générale et l’école des géomètres, des métreurs et des maîtres constructeurs, toutes deux caractérisées par l’utilisation de méthodes d’enseignement novatrices et le caractère expérimental et pratique de leurs cours.
