Die Höflichkeitsforschung ist ein relativ junges akademisches Feld. Höflichkeit als Theorie erlangte erstmals in den 1970er Jahren mit den Arbeiten von Lakoff (1973), Leech (1977) und Brown und Levinson (1978) im Rahmen der Pragmatik ernsthaftes wissenschaftliches Interesse. Ziel der Höflichkeitsforschung ist es, systematisch zu untersuchen, wie wir gute Beziehungen aufrechterhalten und zwischenmenschliche Konflikte vermeiden, indem wir verschiedene sprachliche Regeln und Strategien anwenden, die darauf abzielen, eine reibungslose Kommunikation herzustellen, indem sie die Disharmonie und den Konflikt minimieren, die der menschlichen Kommunikation innewohnen. Die wissenschaftliche Untersuchung der Höflichkeit als sprachliches Phänomen wurde von diesem Ziel inspiriert. Daher haben sich zahlreiche Sozialwissenschaften, darunter Linguistik, Anthropologie, Sozialpsychologie, Soziologie und Kommunikationswissenschaften, für Aspekte der Höflichkeit interessiert.
