Flusspegel oder Durchflussmengen sind für die Planung von Wasserbauwerken von entscheidender Bedeutung. Unvermessene Flussabschnitte erfordern Hochwasserrouting-Techniken zur Abschätzung von Wasserständen oder Durchflussmengen. In dieser Studie werden auf Muskingum basierende Methoden für die Abflussberechnung in unvermessenen Flussabschnitten, einschließlich seitlicher Zuflüsse, bewertet. Die Modellparameter werden anhand von Beobachtungsdaten kalibriert, wobei die Muskingum-Cunge-Methode für unbeeinflusste Abschnitte bewertet wird. Drei Teileinzugsgebiete im Einzugsgebiet des Thukela werden mit Hilfe von digitalen Höhenmodellen und empirischen Gleichungen analysiert. Die kalibrierte Muskingum-Cunge-Methode liefert genaue Abflussganglinien, was auf ihre Anwendbarkeit in unbeeinflussten Einzugsgebieten hindeutet. Die Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die Muskingum-Cunge-Methode für das Hochwasser-Routing im Einzugsgebiet des Thukela geeignet ist und auf andere unbefestigte Flüsse in Südafrika übertragen werden kann.
