Historia de la decadencia de España, escrita en 1854, se destaca por la modernidad en el enfoque histórico centrado en las cuestiones económicas. Tuvo el mérito de abrir un nuevo horizonte de ideas nacionales a la generación contemporánea de su autor que se consagró a las investigaciones históricas. En este estudio se atribuye la decadencia del Imperio a la despoblación, agravada por el descubrimiento de América, y a la penuria de la Hacienda Pública, así como a la prioridad que se le daba a la actividad bélica desde los tiempos de la Reconquista. Es un libro único dentro de la literatura histórica de España.
