Herr und Knecht ist eine Erzählung von Leo Tolstoi, die 1895 in der Zeitschrift Sewerny Westnik (Nördlicher Bote) erschien. In dieser Kurzgeschichte reist der wohlhabende Grundstückseigentümer Wassili Andrejewitsch Brechunov mit seinem demütigem und folgsamen Knecht Nikita zusammen bei einem Schneegestöber durch die Steppe. Wassili ist ungeduldig und möchte die Stadt schnell erreichen, um dort vor anderen Interessenten ein Stück Wald zu kaufen. Der Schneesturm hatte an Heftigkeit zugenommen und es war geboten, zu pausieren, doch der Herr will in seinem Geschäftssinn immer weitergehen. So verirren sie sich und drohen, bald an Unterkühlung zu sterben. In diesem Bewusstsein und der daraus resultierenden Gleichheit werden die Standesunterschiede zunehmend unwichtig. Nachdem der Herr seinen Bauern verlassen hat, ein Versuch, sich doch noch zu retten, kehrt er noch einmal zurück mit der Erkenntnis, die Tolstoi mehrfach thematisiert hat: das einzige und wahre Glück im Leben ist für andere gelebt zu haben. Leo Tolstoi (1828-1910), war ein russischer Schriftsteller. Seine Hauptwerke Krieg und Frieden und Anna Karenina sind Klassiker des realistischen Romans. 3
