Dick Lynas sets out his personal views on the nature and importance of school leadership. The views are based upon his fifteen years of preparing for headship, fifteen years of serving headship and a further twenty years of coaching and mentoring aspiring school leaders at all levels. There is a particular focus on the role of the head teacher in promoting improved pupil learning by means of continually growing and, at the same time, distributing leadership capacity at every level in schools. The author also pays his respects to a representative range of the parents, pupils and colleagues who inspired him to persevere with his belief that great leadership makes for great learning. The author’s anecdotal style does not conceal his passionate commitment to working with and through colleagues to raise levels of attainment among the pupils whom he served. But it means that the book may be of interest not only to those who aspire to headship but also to those who, as parents, pupils or teachers sometimes wonder what it is that head teachers do!

’One of my earliest memories is of the first time I tried to burn our house down. My mother had refused to give me something I wanted so I went out into the back court - or drying green - raided the dustbins and then piled up bits of paper and cardboard underneath the kitchen window of our ground floor tenement flat. Then I set the lot alight with matches that I had borrowed fo...
