Das Hepatitis-B-Virus (HBV) ist trotz der in den letzten zehn Jahren durchgeführten Impfprogramme nach wie vor eine der Hauptursachen für Lebererkrankungen weltweit. Schätzungsweise 2 Milliarden Menschen sind dem HBV-Virus ausgesetzt, und mehr als 240 Millionen sind weltweit chronisch infiziert. Menschen mit chronischer Hepatitis B haben ein hohes Risiko, eine Leberzirrhose und ein Leberzellkarzinom zu entwickeln. Müllsammler leben in prekären sozialen und ökologischen Verhältnissen. Derzeit gibt es nur wenige Daten über HBV-Infektionen in dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe. Daher bestand das allgemeine Ziel dieser Studie darin, das epidemiologische Profil der HBV-Infektion in einer Population von Müllsammlern in Goiânia-Go zu untersuchen.
