Este estudo tem por objetivo explorar a influência da habituação, ligada à antiguidade, na qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem na Tunísia. Embora a experiência profissional seja uma alavanca para a competência, é por vezes acompanhada de desinteresse emocional, de uma rotina pesada e de um cansaço psicológico progressivo. Os resultados revelam que 60% dos enfermeiros com mais de cinco anos de antiguidade se sentem aborrecidos na sua prática, 52% têm dificuldade em manter a sua empatia e 37% consideram a possibilidade de mudar de serviço. Estes números revelam os efeitos insidiosos da habituação na relação entre o prestador de cuidados e o doente. Embora actue como um mecanismo de defesa, a longo prazo pode prejudicar a qualidade dos cuidados. Além disso, 74% dos participantes nunca receberam formação sobre a gestão da fadiga emocional, enquanto 81% manifestaram a necessidade dessa formação. O estudo sublinha a importância de um apoio direcionado para prevenir o esgotamento. A valorização da experiência, a adaptação das políticas de recursos humanos e a oferta de apoio psicológico são factores necessários para manter o empenho humano dos profissionais de saúde e a qualidade da sua relação com os doentes.
