Die Fruchtfliege ist ein ernstzunehmender Schädling für fast alle Obstkulturen weltweit. Unkontrolliert kann dieser Schädling erhebliche Verluste verursachen, die nicht toleriert werden können. Außerdem stellt er eine große Gefahr für den globalen Handel dar, da viele Länder Quarantänebeschränkungen eingeführt haben, um das Risiko der Ansiedlung exotischer Arten zu minimieren. Daher hängen der erfolgreiche Anbau und Export in hohem Maße von einem wirksamen Schädlingsbekämpfungssystem ab. Da sich die verschiedenen Arten von Fruchtfliegen unterschiedlich auf ihre Umgebung reagieren, ist es sehr wichtig, das Vorkommen von Fruchtfliegen während des ganzen Jahres zu kennen und sie korrekt zu identifizieren. Der Export von Guaven und anderen Obst- und Gemüsesorten in verschiedene Länder der Welt ist aufgrund des Befalls mit Fruchtfliegen eingeschränkt. Daher ist es notwendig, Obst frei von Fruchtfliegen zu machen. Infolge der gestiegenen Einfuhr von Obst und Gemüse in den letzten Jahren wurden jedoch häufig Fruchtfliegen ausländischer Herkunft an Quarantäne-Kontrollstellen abgefangen. Daher wird es immer wichtiger, Vorsichtsmaßnahmen gegen ihre Invasion zu treffen.
