Anhand von drei archetypischen viktorianischen Romanen untersuche ich, inwieweit weibliche Protagonistinnen aus der oberen Mittelschicht in der Literatur jener Zeit besonders häufig als (moralisch) wahnsinnig diffamiert wurden. Angesichts der herausragenden Rolle weiblicher Figuren in dieser Arbeit ist es sinnvoll, zunächst theoretische Aspekte des „Geschlechts' zu beleuchten, bevor die Auswirkungen dieses Konzepts im historischen Kontext der viktorianischen Epoche und ihrer Literatur analysiert werden. Bei meiner Analyse der jeweiligen weiblichen Figuren interessieren mich insbesondere zwei Aspekte: Erstens wird die als verrückt beschuldigte Frau typischerweise von ihrem männlichen gesetzlichen Vertreter angeprangert - häufig, um dessen eigene Ziele zu verfolgen. Zweitens erscheinen die „Beweise' für die Geisteskrankheit einer Person sowie die Gründe, die zu ihrer Anprangerung und der daraus folgenden Einweisung führen, dem heutigen Leser oft weit hergeholt. Unter Bezugnahme auf den medizinisch-sozio-historischen Hintergrund - vor dem diese literarischen Werke gelesen werden müssen - zeige ich auf, dass die Entfremdung des modernen Lesers in dem unterschiedlichen Verständnis von „Wahnsinn' als entweder Symptom moralischer Entartung oder als medizinischer Zustand, der den Geist bzw. die Psyche einer Person beeinträchtigt, begründet liegt.
