In der vorliegenden Studie wurde Chitosan aus dem Exoskelett von Ucides cordatus cordatus, gemeinhin als Uçá-Krabbe bezeichnet, gewonnen, wobei die Umwandlung von Chitin in Chitosan durch eine herkömmliche Reaktion sowie durch Mikrowellenbestrahlung erfolgte. Die hergestellten Chitosane wurden anhand ihres Deacetylierungsgrades, ihrer intrinsischen Viskosität und ihrer mittleren viskosimetrischen Molmasse charakterisiert und ihre Eigenschaften mit denen einer Probe aus handelsüblichem Krabben-Chitosan verglichen. Die vergleichende Analyse der durch Mikrowellenbestrahlung und auf herkömmliche Weise hergestellten Chitosanproben zeigte, dass die Bestrahlungsmethode besonders vorteilhaft ist, da bei diesem Verfahren eine höhere Umwandlung der Acetamidgruppen in Aminogruppen bei einem Energieverbrauch von 10 % im Vergleich zur herkömmlichen Methode erzielt wurde, was darauf hindeutet, dass das Verfahren effizient ist und der Prozess Zeit und Energie spart, was den Leser dazu anregt, über die Machbarkeit der Anpassung des Mikrowellenbestrahlungsverfahrens für die Chitosan-Produktion im industriellen Maßstab nachzudenken.
