O abastecimento de água no comando do canal de Hirakud (Índia Oriental) não é adequado para satisfazer as necessidades de irrigação das culturas não monçónicas. Numa base anual, o abastecimento de água do canal é capaz de satisfazer apenas 54% da procura de irrigação a um nível de 90% de probabilidade de excedência (PE). Assim, a fim de mitigar o défice de água para irrigação, a água subterrânea é considerada como uma fonte suplementar. Foi efectuada uma simulação quase tridimensional do fluxo de águas subterrâneas através do Visual MODFLOW para estudar o comportamento das águas subterrâneas. Além disso, foi efectuada uma modelação combinada de simulação e otimização para determinar a bombagem máxima permitida de água subterrânea. Foi então desenvolvido um modelo ótimo de afetação de terras e recursos hídricos para determinar o padrão de cultivo ideal que permite o máximo retorno líquido anual. Os resultados da modelação sugerem que os retornos líquidos anuais da área podem ser aumentados em 51,3 e 12,5% a níveis de 10 e 90% PE, respetivamente, através da adoção de padrões de cultivo óptimos e estratégias de bombeamento óptimas. A adoção de padrões de cultivo optimizados e de estratégias de bombagem optimizadas é fortemente recomendada para uma gestão sustentável dos recursos hídricos e terrestres disponíveis no comando do canal.
