L’approvvigionamento idrico nel comando del canale di Hirakud (India orientale) non è adeguato a soddisfare il fabbisogno irriguo delle colture non monsoniche. Su base annua, la fornitura di acqua del canale è in grado di soddisfare solo il 54% della domanda di irrigazione al 90% di probabilità di superamento (PE). Pertanto, per mitigare il deficit di acqua per l’irrigazione, le acque sotterranee sono considerate una fonte supplementare. Per studiare il comportamento delle acque sotterranee è stata effettuata una simulazione quasi tridimensionale del flusso delle acque sotterranee con Visual MODFLOW. Inoltre, è stata intrapresa una modellazione combinata di simulazione e ottimizzazione per determinare il pompaggio massimo ammissibile delle acque sotterranee. È stato poi sviluppato un modello di allocazione ottimale della terra e delle risorse idriche per determinare il modello di coltivazione ottimale che realizza il massimo rendimento netto annuale. I risultati della modellazione hanno suggerito che i rendimenti netti annuali dell’area possono essere aumentati rispettivamente del 51,3 e del 12,5% ai livelli di PE del 10 e del 90%, adottando modelli di coltivazione ottimali e strategie di pompaggio ottimali. L’adozione di modelli colturali ottimali e di strategie di pompaggio ottimali è fortemente raccomandata per una gestione sostenibile della terra e delle risorse idriche disponibili del comando del canale.
