Die Grundlage der britischen Kunst kann in drei Bereiche aufgeteilt werden. Der Einfluss der keltischen und der sächsischen Kunst und der Vermischung beider Kunststile. Durch die spezielle geografische Lage entwickelte sich in Großbritannien und Irland eine besondere Eigenart der Kunst, die stark durch die Kunst vom Festland beeinflusst wurde, aber ihrerseits auch neue Anregungen auf die Kunststile in Europa gab. Besonders durch die französischen Einflüsse wurden die britischen Inseln geprägt. Sir Armstrong beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte der Kunst in Großbritannien und Irland und der Entwicklung der verschiedenen Kunstrichtungen wie der Architektur, der Malerei und Bildhauerei im Laufe der Jahrhunderte.
