Cette recherche, réalisée dans le cadre du Programme de troisième cycle en éducation de l’Université fédérale de Pelotas, dans la ligne de la philosophie et de l’histoire de l’éducation, porte sur l’éducation à Pelotas-RS au début du 20e siècle, en analysant spécifiquement une institution scolaire : le Patronat agricole du Visconde da Graça. La recherche a été menée en utilisant une approche socio-historique et une analyse documentaire, dont les principales sources sont les rapports annuels et les dossiers des élèves de l’institution, le journal de Pelotas Diário Popular, l’Almanaque de Pelotas, l’Almanaque Correio do Povo (de la ville de Porto Alegre/RS) et les lois et décrets brésiliens relatifs aux patronages. Il vise ainsi à analyser la genèse du Patronato. La base théorique prend en compte certains discours sur la modernisation agricole, l’enseignement professionnel et les politiques médico-hygiénistes, et met l’accent sur l’éducation destinée à la population la plus pauvre du Brésil.
