Il disboscamento delle aree naturali in Brasile sta diventando sempre più una causa di degrado del suolo. La vegetazione invasiva invade queste aree e gli alberi e gli arbusti delle prime fasi di successione abbondano, ritardando così la successione naturale. Allo scopo di ridurre al minimo le azioni predatorie ed esplorative per proteggere le riserve forestali, sono stati proposti diversi modelli agroforestali. L’uso di una miscela di specie autoctone di Caatinga legnosa e Eucalyptus spp. dovrebbe consentire di ottenere fonti rinnovabili di combustibile in questa regione semi-arida. Questa tesi di dottorato presenta uno studio volto a valutare le popolazioni micorriziche e il loro potenziale per aumentare la crescita delle specie arboree. I legumi sono stati coltivati in monocoltura o in piantagioni miste con Eucalyptus camaldulensis o Eucalyptus grandis, con o senza inoculazione di rizobi e micorrize arbuscolari (AM). I risultati indicano che le specie autoctone hanno mostrato un’elevata dipendenza dalle micorrize. La piantagione mista con queste specie ha mostrato differenze significative nella colonizzazione delle radici da parte delle AM e nel numero di spore. La distribuzione e la densità delle specie AM sono state influenzate dalla pianta ospite e dall’inoculazione, consentendo modelli simili a quelli dell’area preservata.
