Esiste una gamma molto diversificata di specie fungine appartenenti a diverse classi che infettano gli insetti. Queste specie patogene per gli insetti si trovano in un’ampia gamma di adattamenti e capacità infettive, compresi i patogeni obbligati e facoltativi. La diffusione delle malattie fungine è comune in molte specie di insetti, mentre alcune specie potrebbero non essere colpite. Negli anni ’80 sono stati condotti i primi studi sugli insetti patogeni, con l’obiettivo di trovare metodi di gestione delle malattie del baco da seta (Steinhaus, 1975). Bassi nel 1835 formulò per la prima volta la teoria dei germi utilizzando il fungo bianco muscardina sul baco da seta, che fu poi chiamato in suo onore Beauveria bassiana. Abdel-Raheem, 2005 & Salem, et al, 2015 Hanno isolato Beauveria bassiana e Metarhizium anisopliae da Cassida vittata e Scropipalpa ocellatella in Egitto e hanno isolato Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae e Verticillium lecanii dal suolo di molte regioni dell’Egitto. Gilbert e Gill (2010) hanno descritto che questa malattia del baco da seta ha dato l’idea di utilizzare funghi che infettano gli insetti per il controllo della gestione dei parassiti.
