Muitos académicos têm-se empenhado em discussões aprofundadas e debatido criticamente esta questão da imigração, analisando os impactos imediatos e as consequências, bem como as justificações teóricas e práticas, os debates de opinião cívica, a objetividade desses regulamentos, os resultados da implementação e as expectativas dos decisores políticos e da maioria do público na avaliação dos resultados dos regulamentos em matéria de imigração. Por conseguinte, o argumento baseia-se na insuficiência de provas pragmáticas sobre os efeitos dos regulamentos e planos de migração.
