O programa de ensino à distância melhora o acesso equitativo ao ensino superior no Quénia. O Bacharelato em Educação (Artes) por ensino à distância foi iniciado na Universidade de Nairobi há quase duas décadas, para permitir que os professores actualizem as suas competências com vista a uma melhor prestação de serviços. Espera-se que os estudantes deste programa financiem a sua educação com recursos próprios. No entanto, o aumento do custo de vida atrasa a conclusão do programa em cerca de 30%, uma vez que os recursos são desviados para satisfazer necessidades familiares imediatas. Os dados da Escola de Educação Contínua e à Distância (SCDE) e da Universidade de Nairobi Enterprises e Services Limited (UNES) relativos a 2006 mostram que, de um total de 6 740 alunos inscritos, apenas 4 467 (66%) estavam a frequentar ativamente o curso, o que implica que cerca de 2 273 (33%) estavam inactivos, principalmente devido a restrições financeiras. Esta situação é atribuída a programas de financiamento limitados a nível nacional. Embora o HELB tenha sido criado para promover o ensino superior, o apoio financeiro limitado do erário público dificulta a prestação de assistência aos estudantes fora dos programas académicos regulares.
