L’obiettivo di questo studio è stato quello di contribuire a una migliore comprensione dei fattori che influenzano la malnutrizione nei bambini sotto i cinque anni a Gibuti, al fine di orientare in modo appropriato i programmi di salute dei neonati e dei bambini. Utilizzando i dati della seconda indagine sulla salute e la famiglia a Gibuti (EDSF2, 2012), lo studio ha rilevato che la malnutrizione colpisce i bambini le cui madri vivono in aree rurali nelle regioni di Dikhil e Obock. Si tratta di bambini provenienti da famiglie povere, le cui madri avevano più di 35 anni al momento del parto e i cui figli avevano più di 5 anni.L’analisi esplicativa ha poi rivelato che il luogo di residenza, la regione di residenza, il tenore di vita della famiglia, le vaccinazioni, la qualità dell’acqua potabile e il grado di nascita sono le variabili che spiegano la prevalenza della malnutrizione. Queste sono le variabili che spiegano la malnutrizione infantile a livello nazionale, ed è stata riscontrata una relazione positiva tra povertà e frequenza scolastica dei bambini.
