Das Ziel dieser Forschung war es, den soziokulturellen Kontext von Wentworth in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Südafrika, zu untersuchen. Das Ziel war es, die Bedeutung von Designforschung und fotografischer Praxis für soziale Themen aufzuzeigen. Aufgrund des ausgeprägten „farbigen' Charakters von Wentworth wurde Literatur zur Definition, Geschichte, aktuellen Dynamik und Komplexität der Identität der Farbigen gesucht. Für diese Untersuchung wurde eine qualitative Analyse unter Verwendung der Grounded Theory-Methode durchgeführt. Für die Datenerhebung wurde ein kooperativer oder partizipativer Forschungsansatz verwendet, indem eng mit Familien und Gesundheits-, Kirchen- und Nichtregierungsorganisationen in Wentworth zusammengearbeitet wurde. Qualitative Datenerhebungsmethoden, die zur Sammlung von Primärdaten verwendet wurden, waren fotografische Dokumentation und Interviews.
